TRANSCONTINENTAL MUSIC TRAVEL AT GITARCAFE
In May the Gitarcafe program actually will start from the end of April with a last moment concert: The Breath of the Earth project bringing together many well known musicians including kanun virtuoso Goksel Baktagir, violinist Nedim Nalbantoglu, and harpist Natalia Mann (New Zealand). The Breath of the Earth project spans folk tunes from different countries featuring the vocals of Sumru Agiryuruyen. Later, on May 16th the same group will play at CRR. One of the most important names on May program is Canadian guitarist, composer and instrument maker Edward Powell. In his concert on ideas for ragas and maqams, Natalia Mann and Izzet Kizil (perc.) will accompany him. On May 11th, the same three musicians will perform Natalia Mann’s music comprising her own compositions, and songs from New Caledonia and Samoa.
One of Turkey's prominent jazz musicians, pianist-composer Ayse Tutuncu, who has toured extensively throughout Europe, will play with her group. Greek lutist Thanos Gountanos, his percussionist brother Yannis and fast rising Turkish violinist Serdar Pazarcioglu will play Greek, Turkish and Roman tunes and songs. Islak Köpek/Wet Dog is another interesting project based primarily on improvisations. The group has given many concerts in Turkey and abroad with musicians and artists from different styles and disciplines. Erdem Şimsek, in his very special concert, will play authentic music of Anatolia with his baglama. Two Azerbaijani musicians, tar player Arif Azertürk and pianist Terane Abbaszade will play works of Azerbaijani composers. Güz Kumpanyasi/The Autumn Company, a young group from Ankara focuses on the musical forms that were born in late 19th and early 20th century in Istanbul. They also have a cd on the Kalan label. Kafdagi vocal-instrument ensemble, is one of the leading groups performing Georgian music with authentic instruments in Turkey. Kent Ozanlari, is a well known group playing the music of Anatolia and of neighboring countries, all its members having Turkish music conservatory origin. Helesa performs songs from the Black Sea with their own arrangements. Before the Helesa concert there is a short film "Gelincin" (dir: Yasemin Taskin, 25 min.). The same group will give another concert for the book “Kemencenin Ordinaryüsü” Picoglu Osman..Cocktails will be served.
At Gitarcafe, there is strong possibility to listen to surprise special guests. There is also a no smoking policy at Gitarcafe. Please don’t forget to call for reservations.
